The Embassy of the Lao PDR in Washington, D.C., organized a celebration of the Lao New Year, BE 2569, on May 9, 2026. The celebration activities included the 13th Friendship Golf Tournament organized by the Lao Golf Association (LGADC) and Ambassador’s Cup Soccer Tournament organized by the North America Lao Soccer Federation (NALSF). In the evening, a festive Lao New Year celebration was held at the Arlington-Fairfax Elks Lodge in Virginia. The event was honored by the presence of H.E. Phoukhong Sisoulath, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao PDR to the United States and Canada; H.E. Thongphane Savanphet, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Permanent Representative of the Lao PDR to the United Nations; distinguished guests; LFND Member, HBK President and Board members; Presidents of Lao-American Associations, Legacies of War; Lao diaspora from various States across the USA and Canada; golfers; soccer players; staff members of the Lao PDR’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., and Permanent Mission to the UN in New York. A total of approximately 450 people attended.
The Lao New Year celebration (Pi Mai) is a cherished traditional festival of Laos, passed down through generations since ancient times to the present day. It is an annual festival for Lao people in the country and Lao diaspora in many countries in the world, including the Lao communities in the USA and Canada. Currently, the Lao government is actively preparing to propose to UNESCO to consider recognizing Lao New Year (Pi Mai) as a World Intangible Heritage in the future. The Lao New Year celebration not only perpetuates the Lao fine customs and culture but also unites the solidarity of Lao diaspora of different ethnicities living in various States in the USA and Canada who came together to meet, reconnect, exchange greetings and extend New Year wishes to one another in an atmosphere of friendship, compassion, unity, warmth, mutual respect-a precious heritage of the Lao people passed down through generations, no matter where they reside. Lao New Year is an auspicious occasion for Lao people and friends of Laos to bless each other with good health, to wash away negativity with the passed year, to welcome positive things into life, to receive good fortune and success, and to achieve new accomplishments in work, business, personal affairs, and daily life, filled with happiness and prosperity throughout the new year and into the future.
On this auspicious and sacred occasion, H.E. Phoukhong Sisoulath, Lao Ambassador to the USA and Canada, delivered warm greetings and extended New Year wishes to the Lao diaspora and distinguished guests present at the celebration. He also sent Lao New Year greetings to all Lao diaspora in the USA and Canada who did not attend the event. The Lao Ambassador highlighted the past year’s activities of the Embassy in fulfilling its duties to promote and enhance the friendship and cooperation between Laos and the USA, and Laos and Canada, as well as its activities in political, economic, cultural, and people-to-people diplomacy, especially relations with Lao communities in the USA and Canada. The Ambassador expressed appreciation to everyone who took valuable time to attend this New Year celebration, including the friendship golf and soccer tournaments. He highly thanked the individuals and organizations that provided support and sponsorship for this New Year celebration, creating a joyful and meaningful atmosphere for perpetuating and preserving Lao fine customs and traditions to endure forever with the Lao people. The Ambassador also invited Lao diaspora in the USA and Canada to visit their beloved motherland of Laos to contribute according to their means, either directly or indirectly, to the ongoing development of the nation. The Lao government always welcomes, and facilitates in various aspects, including visas for Lao diaspora abroad to turn towards the nation, including travel, visit, do business, establish permanent residence in Laos, organize aid projects, or bring their know-how, technical knowledge, technologies, and their rich experiences to help develop Laos. During this Lao New Year celebration, the results of the friendship golf and soccer tournaments were announced, and various awards were presented, including golf and soccer Raffle draws. The guests enjoyed the diverse and unique flavors of Lao food prepared by the Jai Dee Women’s Association and other Lao kitchens. Everyone joined in the lively Lam Vong dance, accompanied by music and traditional Lao singing, entertained by the Band of the North America Lao Soccer Federation.
