During the working visit in Washington, DC, on the September 19, 2026, H.E. Mr. Thongsavan Phomvihane, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, had a meeting with the Lao diaspora living in the United States and Canada. The meeting was attended by about 200 participants including Lao Front for National Development Member in the United States, President and Board Members of Hak Ban Kerd Association (HBK), President and Board Members of North American Lao Soccer Federation (NALSF), as well as Presidents of Associations and Foundations of Lao diaspora in the United States and Canada. Lao PDR’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador to the United States and Canada, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Department of Lao Overseas Affairs were also in attendance.
At the ceremony, H.E. Mr. Phoukhong Sisoulath, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Lao PDR to the United States and Canada, warmly welcomed the Lao diaspora in attendance and highlighted the objectives and significance of the event. On this meaningful occasion, the Lao diaspora had the honor of listening to the talks by H.E. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, who highlighted the achievements made in the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR and the key targets of the Lao PDR’s 10th Five-Year National Socio-Economic Development Plan for 2026–2030, particularly the significant progress made on the Lao Government’s efforts to graduate the country out of the Least Developed Country (LDC) status. The Deputy Prime Minister also emphasized the Government’s conducive policy toward the Lao communities around the world, particularly those residing in the United States and Canada. The Lao diaspora in attendance exchanged views and discussed matters of interest to them with the Deputy Prime Minister, thereby gaining good understanding of the Lao Government’s policy toward them. The Lao Government has always attached importance to the Lao communities around the world and considers them an integral part of the greater Lao family, who can play an important part in the national development of Laos according to their respective means and capabilities. The Deputy Prime Minister expressed his appreciation to the Lao diaspora residing in the United States and Canada for their strong sense of Lao identity, their love for and attachment to the Motherland, as well as their dedication to preserve and pass on Lao fine traditions and cultural heritage within their communities wherever they are. The Deputy Prime Minister also highly valued the active role and contributions of the Lao diaspora in strengthening the friendly relations and cooperation between the Lao PDR and the United States, as well as between the Lao PDR and Canada. The Deputy Prime Minister called upon the Lao diaspora, including the younger generation, to maintain and strengthen their ties with the Motherland by going to Laos to visit the place of their origin, the homeland of their parents and ancestors, engaging in business and trade, undertaking development and aid projects, or, upon retirement, returning to reside permanently in Laos, while bringing their knowledge, experience, professional expertise and technical skills to contribute to national development. The Deputy Prime Minister highly commended the Lao diaspora for the strong solidarity and unity among Lao communities of various ethnicities and for their generosity, warmth and sincerity in welcoming the Lao youth athletes, W.I.G NAGA, who participated successfully in the ECNL International IberCup USA 2026 held recently in North Carolina, the United States. The Deputy Prime Minister also called upon the Lao diaspora to continue preserving and promoting Lao traditions, customs and cultural heritage and those of their ethnicity, while maintaining unity and solidarity, and jointly highlighting the proud and dignified Lao identity in the countries where they live.
The meeting was followed by a dinner and the participants much enjoyed the cultural performances presented by the younger generation of the Lao community, Dok Jumpa Silapa, from Lowell, Massachusetts. The gathering was held in a joyful and convivial atmosphere, with members of the Lao diaspora in attendance expressing their pride at having the opportunity to meet and exchange views closely with the Lao senior leadership and to have the opportunity to interact among the attending members of the Lao diaspora from different States in the USA and Canada.
